LETTER XC. Refusal to Retain Returned Letters.

LETTER XC. Refusal to Retain Returned Letters.

94 Monroe Street, September 2, 1913. May!

No! you are not yourself, or your innate good sense would have told you that we were both to blame.

Whether you admit it or not, I acknowledge that I was dreadfully angry, and acted shamefully. I will not receive the letters you return to me, and therefore send them back to you.

I did pass a wretched night, not in anger, for that passed away in a very few moments, but in tormenting regret that you and I should quarrel, and over a matter as utterly trifling as it was. I cannot and will not give you up, for my whole being is bound up in you. Pardon me, dear May, and recall the dreadful words you have written to me.

Yours now and always, George.
